After the testing conditions of the Amateur Championships, steps are now underway to return to a members course without sacrificing the definition we have recently gained. There will now be one pass of 2″ and two passes of 4″ maintained rough around each fairway. The notoriously popular pockets of lush, thick rough which are in play will also be taken down and maintained at 4″, We are including the more productive carries from tee to fairway in the programme.
Following the end of the largest event at the Club in recent years, it’s time to reflect on what was a very tough yet rewarding week. We are hugely grateful to the 10 volunteers who gave up their time and came to help during the tournament.
Greenkeepers are very lucky as, in our profession, volunteering is common place, it’s a great opportunity for staff to gain tournament experience as well as increase their network of contacts.
The tournament support staff came from South Africa, Sweden, Ireland, Scotland and England and many friendships were made during the week. The extra help ensured course set up each morning ran like clockwork for the duration of the week.
The volunteers were a great credit to themselves and their clubs and for that, everyone at Royal Cinque Ports and the R&A are extremely grateful for their contribution.
